When dealing with the criminal element, Maxine only carries her department-issued hardware, extensive police training, and intuition derived from years of experience. Known Powers: (none) Limitations / Enhancements: (none) Equipment: Body Armor: when expecting trouble, Maxine wears a bullet-resistant vest under her trench coat while on the job. This item acts to transmute Shooting damage into Blunt Attack damage instead, reducing its effectiveness by 1 CS in the process. Bullets still hurt, but they're survivable. Body Camera: though she mainly performs investigative work, Maxine is required to wear and operate a body camera while on the job. It records everything she does while she's working, which is uploaded to a central computer when docked to recharge after every shift. Radio: Maxine carries a radio that can send signals to, and receive them from, a central base. It works with Typical (6) ability, having an ideal maximum range of ten miles, though as is the case with smartphones, local geography and infrastructure can reduce this greatly. Sidearm: Maxine carries her trusty sidearm wherever she goes, whether or not she's on the clock. This one-handed weapon can discharge a single round to inflict Typical (6) Shooting damage, or a three-round burst of such to inflict Good (10) Shooting damage. Smartphone: while she often relies on a radio on the clock, Maxine carries her smartphone wherever she goes. This hand-held supercomputer can transmit and receive radio signals with Poor (4) power, which gives it a maximum transception range of five miles under ideal conditions. Taser (R): this weapon is built to incapacitate targets. It fires darts within its current area that, if they can inflict their Feeble (2) Edged Attack damage, deliver a stunning jolt of high voltage that will Stun targets who fail to resist its Excellent (20) rank electric charge. Zip Ties: instead of handcuffs, Maxine uses tactical zip ties to restrain perpetrators. While made from conventional plastics, they prevent others from moving or breaking free with Excellent (20) ability, doing so by preventing them from leveraging their full Strength to escape. Quirks: Adrenal Surge: allowing her to demonstrate surprising power for someone so small, Maxine can occasionally draw upon a great well of Strength. Once per day, she can bolster it by +1 CS for 1d10 turns, after which she suffers a -1 CS penalty to such for 1d100 turns. Dulled Sense / Vision: Maxine's big green eyes aren't all that helpful without her thick, round-rimmed glasses bolstering their poor effectiveness. Should she find herself without these implements, she attempts all vision-based Intuition ACTIONs with a -2 CS penalty. Talents: Detective / Espionage 2: a seasoned detective with almost two decades of on-the-job experience, Maxine excels at getting to the bottom of almost any mystery. She may add a +2 CS to ACTIONs she attempts related to digging up information or finding clues of any sort. Guns: since she lacks physical presence, Maxine has to rely upon her service weapon more than she'd like while working, so she actively maintains this skill. It allows her a +1 CS bonus to her Agility when firing standard, semi-automatic, or fully automatic rifles or pistols. Law: as a part of her responsibilities on the job, Maxine has learned the ins and outs of the legal system. She knows what is and isn't a crime, and should benefit from a +1 CS to her Reason when called upon to attempt ACTIONs related to the law and various legal matters. Law Enforcement: a veteran law enforcement officer, Maxine naturally possesses this skill. It provides her numerous additional talents and contacts, and since she's still a policewoman, she can legally carry firearms and arrest lawbreakers discovered within her jurisdiction. Martial Arts type B: should she be subject to violence and not have her sidearm handy, Maxine can defend herself while unarmed. She may attempt to punch, kick, head butt, elbow smash, or even bite an opponent with a +1 CS bonus to the Fighting (off) rank listed above. Contacts: Maxine is a police detective who treats her coworkers and the public with great kindness and respect, and has garnered countless related contacts as a result. There are any number of people who would readily assist her should she but ask, though she refuses to rely upon others. Costume: Most of the time, Maxine's ensemble includes a long sleeved white, collared shirt beneath a black suit jacket, black trousers, black leather shoes, a black leather belt, a black fedora, and a faded black World War II French navy trench coat. Her ties vary in color, however. Personality: A firm believer in giving back to the community, Maxine tries to do so without taking in return. Her ultimate goal in life is to leave the world a better place than she found it, which isn't too large a goal for her to accomplish, considering the state of the world these days. A specific part of this goal, however, involves countering the criminal behavior of numerous members of her own family. While she refuses to act against them directly, Maxine has no qualms about putting the associates of her illicit family members in jail... or in the ground. Story: Maxine grew up poor, like most of her extended family. Unlike her relatives, however, Maxine didn't use that excuse to start a life of crime. No, she was highly driven to elevate herself above her difficult childhood, and then to give back to her community as much as possible. Working full-time while pursuing a degree in criminal justice, Maxine graduated near the top of her class in college. Getting a job with the local police, she readily excelled on the job, quickly moving from her initial position as a meter maid into full-blown detective work. Cracking numerous cases the rest of her peers had no clue how to handle, Maxine secured her place in the department. Though a 'plain clothes' officer, she makes sure she dresses professionally, even if she looks like something out of an eighties movie. But her style suits her. Though she works hard, and is a highly ethical officer, the one line that Maxine won't cross is the apprehension of her various criminal relatives. She goes out of her way to avoid investigating cases involving them, both out of loyalty to her family and not wanting to complicate them. The criminal associates of her illicit relatives, on the other hand, they're fair game. This has brought her into conflict with the Hedgehog House on numerous occasions, as one of her cousins is in deep with that syndicate, and simply watching him has led Maxine to witness their crimes. In particular, she's made it her personal mission to put Frankie Five Toes away for life. Something of an elite thug the Hedgehogs deploy on more complicated capers, he's an expert marksman that she believes is responsible for numerous cold cases her department is still sitting on. The Hedgehogs won't act directly against Maxine for fear of wreaking dissension in their ranks, but they do make her life more difficult than it needs to be. She refuses to 'get the hint,' though, so Maxine suffers through their endless shenanigans while whittling down their ranks.
